Please don't purchase this device if you value your data and have a multi-user network. twice this month alone. I ordered the ReadyNAS to replace an aging Linksys GigaDrive. The ReadyNAS stopped responding to connection requests, pings, etc. It takes HOURS just to restart (take a look at the forums). I can't recommend the ReadyNAS for business use and will be replacing mine with a QNAP TS-639 Pro.
Share management is extremely easy with the online interface, as are all settings changes. Freakin' love it. The NTI Shadow software works pretty well, though it locked up a Vista machine mid-backup one time (doubt that was the ReadyNAS's fault). I researched quite a few NAS units before purchasing and I'm extremely happy. It played nice with my little network almost immediately and has been happily serving print jobs and backing up four computers for a few weeks now. Drive syncing is a tad slow, but the unit works fine during that time and doesn't slow down normal operations at all. For the price, I don't think there is a more robust, speedy NAS on the market.
(BTW, I could copy the library onto the firewire external HD easily). Took a long time to figure out how to do RAID0 (500GB*2) and even longer to set it up. Returned. And after all of this work I wasn't able to copy my iTunes library over to the NAS (reading/writing errors). I tried 4 times and finally gave up. Amazon did a good job. Didn't even have to pay shipping back.
way better). The interface is easy to navigate and the way it handles new drives is great. There is so much you can do with this that it does take a long time for newbs to learn all the ins and outs of using a home server. In a few hours both the drives were synced up again and I've had no problems since.
But if you want to take advantage of all the cool features this thing can do, be prepared to read lots of forum posts and school yourself on port forwarding. (BTW "thanks." are in order to Amazon for resolving the failed drive situation in LESS than 24 hours of me contacting them, they sent me a new one before i had time to blink).I store all my itunes and photos on the readynas and link to them with my laptops (pc and mac) with no problems. In all honesty, it's actually faster now to get to my photos (although i did switch from using iPhoto to Picasa. The ReadyNas Duo has been absolutely awesome so far. you should get one. Which brings me to my one fault for this system.
If all you want is backup. no problems, it should be very easy for you.
(my ReadyNas Duo is connected to Apple Airport Extreme wirelessly linked to mac and pc laptops and an xbox 360. I had to replace a drive that was starting to fail (the readynas informed me that it was about to fail) and all I had to do was take one drive out and put in the new one.
None of this is very hard to do, it just takes time. I can still connect to the photos while i'm away from home and apparently i can stream my itunes when I'm away too.
I haven't quite figured out how to do that yet. very cool inexpensive home server.
works like a champ)
Very nice server but the setup is kinda tricky at first it took me a couple of hours to figure out the HTTPS and sharing feature. When I did figure out everything went smoothly. A beginner will hard time to set this thing up need to call support to guide. The noise is very low and acceptable and to access the server is very fast.
